Under the scheme, about 800 million people in the country will be able to get free foodgrains. According to officials, it will cost an estimated Rs 26,000 crore to provide foodgrains to the poor.
The scheme was also implemented last year
The central government imposed a nationwide lockdown during the Corona transition last year. Meanwhile, under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana for the poor, every poor person was given 5 kg of wheat or rice per month and each family was given one kg of chickpeas free of cost.
The scheme was launched in March for three months. It was later extended to 30 November 2020. The grain received under this scheme was provided in addition to the current quota.
Wheat will also be given at Rs 2 per kg
Last year, under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, ration card holders were also given the facility to purchase 5 kg of wheat and rice per person apart from the current quota. Under this, wheat was sold at Rs 2 per kg and rice at Rs 3 per kg.
The government had said in March last year that the price of wheat was Rs 27 per kg, but it was given by the ration shop at a cheaper rate of Rs 2 per kg. Similarly, rice priced at Rs 37 per kg was given at Rs 3 per kg.
